Oxford
Companion to English LiteratureEdited by Margaret Drabble
6th Edition, Hardcover, 1216 pages
Published by Oxford Univ Press, December 2000
The Oxford Companion to English Literature provides short descriptions of historical and literary characters, plot summaries, brief biographies of writers, myths, and legends.
The book is very useful as a quick reference when reading literature. It can be quite handy when watching some of the new adventure series such as Xena: Warrior Princess (I watch with my children ...) and Hercules. The Oxford Companion to English Literature often provides descriptions of of the mythical and literary characters that some of the new characters are based on.
Recently my children noticed that the storyline of an encounter between Xena and Ullyses seemed much like the adventures of Odysseus on the Odyssey. The Oxford Companion to English Literature confirmed that Ullyses and Odysseus were one and the same and provided a storyline to compare with the Xena episode. What fun!
