Edging the front of the shady border or pathway, in containers, around special features are some of the ways to use this 15cm (6") to 40cm (18") group of Hosta.


Hosta 'Allan P. McConnell'

Height 20cm. (10") Spread 45cm. (18"). This Hosta nakaiana hybrid has a green leaf with a fine white detailing to the leaf edge. The purple bell-shaped flowers bloom in the summer. It is very nice on the path edge or in a container. (Seavers)

Hosta 'Birchwood Parky's Gold'

Height 45cm. (18") Spread 60cm. (2'). This Hosta has oval green-gold leaves that change to harvest gold early in the summer. The leaves are very delicately ruffled and veined. It creates a neat circular mound which is fairly prostrate in habit. Light mauve flowers bloom in mid summer. It can tolerate some sun and is ideal as a smaller groundcover . (Shaw 1986).

Hosta 'Blue Cadet'

Height 40cm. (15") Spread 70cm. (26"). The durable blue round leaves form a tight mound. It is very dependable and brings that great blue colour to small garden spaces or containers. (Aden). AHS Nancy Minks Award Winner in 1986

Hosta 'Canadian Shield'Hosta 'Canadian Shield'

Height 45cm. (18") Space 60cm. (2'). Hosta 'Canadian Shield' has taken all the great qualities of Hosta 'Halcyon'(Eric Smith) and the changed colour to a glossy rich forest green. The heavy veining and good substance of the leaf makes it slug resistant. This Hosta will take more sun than most. It will hold up to any weather or soil conditions Canadian Gardens will throw at it! Hosta 'Fall Bouquet'

Height 30cm. (1') Space 40cm. (15").The deep glossy, forest-green leaves are lance-shaped and held on dark almost royal purple stems. Lavender flowers are produced in profusion in late summer. This is one of the darkest Hostas around. A very interesting combination.

Hosta 'Ginko Craig'Hosta 'Ginko Craig'

Height 15cm. (6") Spread 45cm. (18"). This is a very popular and versatile edger Hosta. It has lanceolate dark grass-green leaves with a neat, wide white edge. The violet-orchid flowers are produced in mid summer on 20cm (10") tall wiry stems. (Craig-Summers)

Hosta 'Golden Scepter'

Height 30cm. (1') Spread 45cm. (18"). This is a very elegant sunny yellow coloured sport of Hosta 'Golden Tiara'. The orchid coloured flower burst out of this Hosta in mid-summer. It is a rapid growing Hosta that makes an excellent edger for shade only. (Savory 1 983)

Hosta 'Golden Tiara'

Height 35cm. (14") Spread 60cm. (2'). The apple-green spear-shaped foliage has a tidy golden yellow margin. The abundant orchid flowers produced in mid summer. It is a fairly rapid grower making it great as a small groundcover. Popular! AHS Nancy Minks Award in 1980. (Savory 1977) AGM

Hosta 'Invincible'

Height 25cm. (10") Spread 35cm. (14"). Such rich glossy grass green leaves make you look twice at this beauty. This is a good, compact, durable plant with pale lavender almost white flowers in mid summer. (Aden 89)

Hosta rectifolia var. chionea

Height 20cm. (8") Spread 30cm. (1'). The deep green, smooth leaves have a brilliant silvery white edge. This Hosta blooms in late summer with lavender flowers. It is a showy edger which complements many ferns and blue Corydalis. .

Hosta 'Shade Fanfare'Hosta 'Shade Fanfare'

Height 40cm. (15") Spread 60cm. (2'). This Hosta has golden foliage with a white edge. The foliage starts off golden yellow with a creamy edge, turning to chartreuse with a white edge by mid summer. It brightens any dark spot in your garden. The purple flowers bloom in late summer. Use it as a small groundcover or larger edger! (Aden 1986) AGM

Hosta 'So Sweet' Hosta 'So Sweet'

Height 30cm. (1') Spread 20cm. (8"). This Hosta is an ofspring of Hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet'. The lanceolate, smooth foliage has a creamy white edge. In mid summer the flowers are lavender with purple stripes and are slightly scented. (Aden 1986)

Hosta 'Stiletto'

Height 15cm. (6") Spread 20cm. (10"). The narrow, lance-shape leaves are almost grass-like with a bright cream edge. The interesting undulating leaf formation making it look like its in motion. It ia a small edger hosta or rockery plant. This Hosta is excellent in all regards. (Aden 1987)

Hosta 'Sugar Plum Fairy'

Height 10cm. (4") Spread 20cm. (10"). The small, spikey lance-shaped leaves have wavy edges and are deep glossy green. This makes a wonderful, vigorous edger or can be used in between paving stones in a woodland path. Extremely floriferous purple flowers are produced in mid summer. (Briggsl987)

Hosta 'White Ray'

Height 35cm. (14") Spread 60cm. (2'). This is a classic undulata type of Hosta but with a twist. The center rib is white - just a single white ray. This Hosta has a neat and tidy habit with lavender flowers in the summer.(Minks 1974)
