Dianthus 'Flashing Light'

Zone 2. Caryophyllaceae. Maiden Pinks. Height 20cm (8"). Spread 40cm (16"). Ruby-red flowers in early summer smother this low spreading mat.. The foliage offers an additional interest in being bronze-green. A good edge plant. for full sun and average to well-drained soils.

Dictamus alba

Dictamus alba var ruber

Zone 3. Rutaceae. Southern Europe, Asia. Gas Plant. Height 70cm (28"). Spread 75cm (30"). The pinky-mauve flowered form of this long -lived perennial. Prefers a sunny, well-drained site. In the heat of the sun, the foliage and the flowers give off a heavy citronella-type scent. The scent given off by the flowers is actually a flammable gas, hence, the common name, Gas Plant. Give this plant time to settle in, as often it will not bloom the first year after transplanting.

Dierama pulcherrimum

Zone 8. Iridaceae. South Africa. Angel's Fishing Rod. Height 60 cm (2’). Spread 60 cm (2’). Forms a good clump with strap leaves. Long arching flower stalks loaded with dangling pink bells in early summer. A slow growing, long-lived perennial that resents being moved about. Winter protect with some extra mulch. Sun to semi-shade, with good moisture retention but well drained soils

Same as above except with white dangling bells

Disporum hookeri

Zone 6. Liliaceae. Fairy-bells. Height 30cm (12"). Spread 20cm (8"). Shade to semi-shade, in loose organic soil. Flowers are little greenish white bells produced in the spring. In the fall large red berries are produced. Similar growth habit to Solomon’s Seal only the stems are irregularly jointed. A great woodland plant.
