Castilleja miniata
Scarlet Paintbrush. Height 20cm-90cm (8-30"). Linear leaves have long
wooly hairs. The "flowers" are actually bright red coloured bracts. It is native
to the alpine meadows of the Pacific Northwest of America. Unfortunately, this plant is
partially parasitic and does not transplant well nor survive in the garden situation, but
it is a good photo!! |

(30"). The fringed orchid-pink flowers bloom from May to September as long as it is
deadheaded regularly. The soft grey-green leaves make a compact mound in sun to part shade

are produced in mid to late summer. This is a durable plant with a long-lasting blooming
season in the summer. It has a very neat upright growth habit and simple broad lanceolate
leaves. Semi-shade in average garden soil. |

Zone 4. Ranunculaceae. Height 2M (6) Gorgeous, pure white, sweetly
fragrant blossoms on tall stalks in late summer. The foliage is a deep purple black, the
darkest of any Cimicifuga, and maintains the colouring even in partial shade. It is a
standout and a good colour to add to any garden as it blends well with cool or hot
colours. Humus rich soils are preferred. It is slow to bulk up so does not overwhelm even
a smaller garden. |

Clematis heracleifolia
Ranunculaceae. China. Height 90cm (3). Spread 1.2M (5). An
herbaceous Clematis that forms a woody base with broad, divided leaves up the stems that
bear clusters of sweetly scented, blue, hyacinth-bell flowers in late summer. After
flowering, the entire plant then is covered in a mass of silvery, fluffy seedheads. They
prefer well drained, limy soil in sun. |
Clematis heracleifolia davidiana
A form of C. heraclefolia that was collected in China. Graham S.
Thomas describes this form as having "rich blue flowers with segments less reflexed
and more spreading, creating a more worthy bloom." |
Clematis integrifolia

indigo-blue flowers are at the ends of the stems which tend to flop on the ground unless
supported. It blooms from June to Septmber. It prefers a well drained, retentive, limy

This C. intergifolia has larger, brighter blue flowers than the
species. |
Clematis recta
Ranunculaceae. Europe. Height 1.2M (5') Spread 60cm (2'). This Clematis should
be staked to form a 5-6' column with its starry white flowers on top, or it can be left to
sprawl on the ground or through shrubs. It will re-bloom if it is cut back after the first
flush of bloom in June or left to enjoy the masses of silvery seed heads. It needs good,
limy soil in full sun for the best effect. |

golden yellow daisy flowers above fine-textured foliage. It blooms all summer and is great

clusters of red berries in the fall. The leaves also colour well in the fall. It likes

combination with Hosta Krossa Regal. It grows best in semi-shade in average to
rich well-drained soil that does not dry out. |
