Sentence Functions

This section of Exploring English describes English sentence functions.

Sentences can be classified according to function.

A declarative sentence makes a statement:

The car is green.

An interrogative sentence asks a question:

Is the car yours?

An imperative sentence issues a command or request:

Drive carefully.

An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling:

Not him!
