Why
Would Anyone Do Philosophy?
While most of us do not pursue philosophy in a formal
academic sense, aspects of philosophy are at play in our lives, including:
-
The type of government employed by our country. The
nature of good government was a key philosophical topic discussed by
Plato and many since. Recent history has introduced democracy,
fascism, communism, monarchies, and other forms of government.
-
Various code of conduct for societies and individuals.
-
Personal and professional ethics.
-
Analysis of key issues such as personal rights,
freedom of expression, euthanasia, and genetic engineering.
-
Personal moral values and conduct.
-
Critical thinking.
Many of the important thinkers suffered and sometimes died
to defend their philosophical views. The lives of many people have been
influenced dramatically by philosophical views and choices. Wars and
terrorist acts can be seen as a conflict of philosophical views with
horrific consequences.
We all make choices daily that reflect personal values,
ethics, and philosophical analysis. We are all active philosophers in a
general sense.
The recommended books, articles, and other resources
provided in Exploring Philosophy are intended
to help you share the journey of thoughtful writers throughout the ages
and to help you become an active philosopher in your own lives.
Happy Travels!
